Carbohydrates, or carbs, are all the hype. With the hundreds of low-carb diets that people are on, one figures it’s best to avoid carbs. However, majority of people don’t know what a carbohydrate really is and have minimal knowledge on which carbs to consume. Here’s the good, the bad, and the ugly of the carb-world.

But first- what is a carb? Carbohydrates fuel cells and give you energy. When you eat them, your body breaks them down into simple sugars like glucose, which raises your blood sugar levels. Then, your body produces a hormone called insulin, which takes the glucose and puts it in your cells. When insulin is done with this process, you become tired and your body tells you that you are hungry!

THE GOOD:  COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES. Complex carbs keep you full longer because they have less of an effect on your blood sugar levels, thanks to nutrients like fiber. They are also good sources of vitamins such as zinc and vitamin E. These “good guys” include whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and  fruit:)

 THE BAD: SIMPLE (REFINED) CARBOHYDRATES. You pop into Starbucks and grab a giant pastry to go with your latte. Half an hour later, you find yourself wondering how you’re hungry again when you just ate a danish the size of your face! This is because sugar like candy, cookies, snack cakes, and white flour are refined carbohydrates and are broken down quickly and don’t have high nutrition, so you feel hungry sooner. 

HFCS was created  by changing the glucose in cornstarch to fructose (another type of sugar).
Sounds yummy, right? HFCS is dangerous because of how it is digested in the body. As if sugar wasnt bad enough?
Avoiding sodas, processed sweets, and sugar cereals will help you cut back on HFCS.
